Among the attendees were representatives from the largest broadcasters and sound reinforcement companies in Hong Kong including TVB, Cable TV, RTHK, Metro Radio, HK Commerical Radio and PCCW to name a few.
During the seminar, Mr. Martin Barbour, Support Engineer for Optocore, introduced the company, it’s products and design philosophies. Optocore is a dual optical ring network for transporting audio, Ethernet and serial data and video securely, reliably and synchronously over long distances. Their systems are typically used in PA applications, installed sound venues and broadcasting.
Martin also discussed the company’s new SANE network system which utilizes all of Optocore’s core technologies but instead of using optical interconnects it uses twisted pair CAT5 or CAT6 cabling. This dramatically reduces cost while still providing all the benefits of the larger Optocore optical networks. SANE stands for Synchronous Audio Network Plus Ethernet and, as the name implies, it is a dedicated audio routing network with full 100baseT Ethernet tunneled into the data stream. This method keeps audio and data totally separate thereby improving reliability over purely Ethernet based systems. Special “bridge” interfaces facilitate interconnectivity between the two systems allowing vast and easily expandible networks to be built.
A fully working demo system was available for the attendees to get hands on experience in operating the system. This included several types of stagebox I/O such as the LX4AP and the new X6R AD/DAconvertors, the YG2/YS2 yamaha interface cards which allows all Yamaha consoles to be connected directly onto the network and a MADI I/O interface which allows simple integration of Protools HD systems and a wide range of large scale MADI based mixing console onto the network.
